Did you know that fish stocks across the world are in danger of collapsing? Sadly, estimates are that in the next 40 years fish will be off the menu altogether, unless we act.As fish become scarcer, illegal 'pirate' fishing has become one of the greatest threats to our oceans. By ignoring fisheries laws and often using destructive fishing gear, pirate fishing operators cause massive damage to the marine environment. But it's not just fish that are in trouble. Fisheries are a vital source of food, income and employment for countries around the world, including many of the poorest. If we don’t achieve sustainability for our fisheries, millions of the world’s poor will go hungry and lose the chance for a better future. Below are some great ways you can get involved from getting the campaign t-shirt to dining out at one of the many restaurants who are putting sustainable fisheries at the top of their menus in aid of EJF. EJF's Save the Sea campaignOur campaign includes action to close the loophole in international law that allows pirate vessels to use ‘Flags of Convenience’, which they fly to disguise their operations, their owners, their profits and their abuses. Banning Flags of Convenience has been described by fisheries experts as the single most effective step in eradicating illegal pirate fishing and will be a major blow against pirate fishing globally. It will help protect dwindling fisheries, secure marine biodiversity and support many of the world's poorest people by improving food security. It is a simple, achievable goal which we hope you'll support on World Ocean's Day, June 8th 2010. | ||||||
You can make a difference today while celebrating our wonderful oceans and protecting them for the future. Thank you.
