It will be used to help combat pirate fishing but also as a water ambulance.
Thank you to everyone who helped make our boat a reality! Like EJF, it's only small, but will make a massive difference.

EJF has two new local staff members to co-ordinate our Save the Sea project in Sierra Leone
Originally from Freetown, Victor Cole is EJF's Country Representative in Sierra Leone. His key role will be developing relationships with stakeholders including government and local organisations to combat illegal pirate fishing.
Amara Kalone is our Community Co-ordinator. Born and bred on Sherbro Island Amara is EJF's crucial link to the local fishing communities who are being most affected by the impacts of illegal pirate fishing. Amara will also be in charge of running EJF's small boat to monitor pirate fishing in Sierra Leone. When not in use by EJF and local representatives, the boat can be used as a water ambulance facilitating fast transport from remote coastal areas to medical facilities.
In Feb 2010 EJF's Senior Campaigner, Duncan Copeland begin_of_the_skype_highlighting end_of_the_skype_highlighting, met with President Koroma of Sierra Leone to discuss the impacts of illegal pirate fishing in the country's coastal waters and what can be done about it. They watched EJF's latest film 'Deadly Catch' which will be released to the public soon.
EJF’s boat involved in rescue at sea
EJF has been able to work with the Sierra Leone Navy to save lives at seaOn September 15th, local EJF staff on Sherbro Island in Sierra Leone took an emergency call from the chief one of our partner fishing communities. A boat transporting goods and people from the local area had capsized and sank, and were in urgent need of rescue. Despite their daily lives being dependent on the sea, many people in the area cannot swim, and drowning is an enormous threat. EJF arrived on the scene in time to work with the Sierra Leone Navy to rescue the passengers aboard the vessel. While the boat itself and all the goods aboard were lost, thankfully all hands were able to be transported to shore safely. |
