INDITEX commit to urgent actions on Uzbek cotton
10 March 2010 - As a result of an email action and back ground campaigning by EJF the CSR Global Director of INDITEX came to EJF’s office yesterday to discuss what immediate actions they can take to ensure no forced child labour and Uzbek cotton exists in their supply
Mr Chercoles referred to the amazing number of emails he had received from EJF’s activist supporters and urging INDITEX to do the right thing. He felt strongly INDITEX should reply to those who urged them to do the right thing and has sent EJF this letter to send on to you. INDITEX is a large Spanish corporation and one of the world's largest fashion groups. It is made up of almost a hundred companies dealing with activities related to textile design, production and distribution and runs over 4,350 stores worldwide and owns brands like Zara, Massimo Dutti, Bershka, Oysho, Pull and Bear, Zara Home, Uterqüe and Stradivarius. In the past 2 years EJF has secured commitments from over 40 of the world’s biggest clothing retailers to take action to address the worst environmental and human rights abuses associated with cotton production – particularly forced child labour and pesticide use. EJF’s most recent report Slave nation, released in 2010 revealed the continued exploitation of child workers by the Government in Uzbekistan’s cotton industry. See how you can help EJF make a difference to these issues. Financial support from our members and friends helps us pay for our work defending the rights of vulnerable communities and the natural environment. |
