EJF’s investigations into illegal ‘pirate’ fishing in West Africa are being highlighted by the BBC World News as part of tve's ‘Earth Report’ series, with part one showing on Friday the 20th February at 20:30.

EJF film footage of pirate fishing is now being shown by the BBC in its ‘Earth Report’ series in a hard hitting two-part expose of the pirate fishing trawlers illegally plundering the seas off the coast of West Africa. Stolen Fish - Part 1 by tve will broadcast on BBC World News on Friday 20 February at 20:30, with repeats on Tuesday 24 February at 15:30 and Wednesday 25 February at 02:30 (all times quoted as UK time zone currently GMT).

EJF has been investigating the extent and impacts of illegal 'pirate' fishing in West Africa for several years. During the course of this work we have been able to expose not only the incredible numbers of pirate fishing vessels that are devastating the marine ecosystems of West Africa, but also that this theft of fish is having profound social and economic effects on local fishing communities throughout the region.

Essentially pirate fishing in West Africa is stealing from some of the poorest people in the world, people who have few, if any, alternatives for their jobs and sources of food. Where is the fish going to? Well, unfortunately it is a sad reality that much of it is coming to Europe, in effect laundered into the market to satisfy our ever-growing demands for seafood.
