Pesticides are toxic by design. They are manufactured with the sole aim of killing, repelling or inhibiting the growth of specific organisms. Each year, accidental pesticide poisonings claim 20,000 lives. Developing countries feel the worst effects of pesticide use – using 25% of the world’s pesticides but experiencing 99% of pesticide-related deaths. In these countries pesticides may not be subject to stringent regulation and public awareness of their risks can be limited.
Pesticides are equally devastating to biodiversity. In many cases they are not as selective as they are claimed to be, and can wipe out populations of beneficial species and are harmful to wildlife. |
