Pesticides are toxic by design. They are manufactured with the sole aim of killing, repelling or inhibiting the growth of specific organisms.

Each year, accidental pesticide poisonings claim 20,000 lives. Developing countries feel the worst effects of pesticide use – using 25% of the world’s pesticides but experiencing 99% of pesticide-related deaths. In these countries pesticides may not be subject to stringent regulation and public awareness of their risks can be limited.

Pesticides are equally devastating to biodiversity. In many cases they are not as selective as they are claimed to be, and can wipe out populations of beneficial species and are harmful to wildlife.

EJF is campaigning to

  • Raise awareness of the harmful impacts on the environment and human health of chemicals like endosulfan
  • Press national governments to introduce measures to ban the import, sale and use of dangerous pesticides
  • Secure global bans on the one of the world’s most hazardous pesticides (endosulfan), and empower developing countries to implement and enforce their national measures through international cooperation

"To my view the Environmental Justice Foundation is pretty much unique in bringing people and environment together. We will never conserve and nurture our environment including the diversity of its wildlife if we ignore the need of the people who have to live and work in these areas."
