Of the 90,000 tonnes of Brazilian shrimp produced in 2003, 34,784 was exported to Europe. Yet in the UK and Europe, many consumers remain unaware of the production method used for the prawns they buy, and hence the devastating impacts they can be unwittingly supporting.

Pressure exerted by consumers, retailers and importers, can - and does - help influence the standards by which prawns are produced. External scrutiny of expansion, production methods and reports of human rights abuses can support the investigations and advocacy being undertaken by local communities, and activists in Brazil to mitigate industrial shrimp farming's impacts.

EJF is:

  • Working with campaign partners in Brazil, supporting their efforts to expose abuses and implement long-term solutions that protect people and wildlife.

  • Raising awareness in the UK and Europe. A country report will be published which will reveal the results of our field investigations in Ceará, together with scientific research.

  • Partnering Instituto Terramar, enabling them to develop their capacity to research, document and expose the issues to a national audience, by providing video and media training.
