To:Mr Juan Somavia, Director General of International labour Organisation

Dear mr Somavia,

I am writing to ask what action the International Labour Organisation is taking to ensure the Uzbek Government complies with its obligations following the signing of ILO Convention 138 on the Minimum Age of Work and Convention 182 on the Worst Forms of Child Labour in April 2008.

The Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) documented the continued use of forced child labour as a result of Government coercion in both the 2008 and 2009 cotton harvest. As the 2010 cotton harvest begins I would specifically like to ask what responses the Uzbek Government have made to the ILO Committee of Experts Report and what action the ILO is taking to ensure that children are not working in arduous forced labour this year?

Yours sincerely,
